Unique Replacing A 4 Way Switch
Four way switches are used in combination with three way switches.
Replacing a 4 way switch. This dimmer switch will serve as another secondary switch. Both the smart switch and the original 3 way. The inputs and outputs were side to side respectively in stead of top and bottom as you show and how my new switch is designed.
Now the box with the 4 way switch has only one wire coming into it. Four way switches are used to control lighting from three or more locations. To replace a four way switch follow these steps.
According to the diagram the red and black wires are the traveling wires and the white is the common lead. Remove the 3 way switch and box. You should already have two 3 way switches spdt if you have a 4 way switch dpdt.
When the switch is in the up position the current can flow through two terminals. There are four terminals that provide two sets of toggle positions on a four way switch. The sensor you are using can either function as a 2 way or 3 way switch it does not function as a 4 way switch.
Remove that single cable from both boxes and abandon the wires capped and taped folded back inside the wall. It is important to understand how these switches are wired before attempting to troubleshoot or replace. Then use a voltage tester to make sure that the circuit is dead.
I was replacing a 4 way switch that seemed to be burned out on one pole and still had problems. Follow step 12 above to pair. Each set of terminals is one of the toggle positions.
