Supreme Adding A 4 Way Switch
First of all we need to go over a little basic terminology on switches.
Adding a 4 way switch. Connect the returning travellers from the new switch. The 4 way switch will have 2 terminals marked in and 2 marked out. I know that the 3 ways must be at the two ends but i m not sure how to wire the newly added 4 way.
Take the wire that is now connected to the common terminal in the 3 way switch network and splice it to the black wire. Wiring a 4 way switch is simply adding a switch to an already existing 3 way switch circuit. Some 4 way switches may have the in and out pairs opposite each other rather than top and bottom.
The black and red travelers from both sides of the cut which are now coming towards the 4 way from both of the 3 ways will go into the in on one side and into the out. Look at the markings on yours and read the instructions carefully. I have an existing circuit consisting of a 4 way 2 3 way switches.
You will need to cut break this and add the 4 way switch in between. Take the existing wires that are now connected to the other 2 traveller terminals and connect them to the in or the. My advice worth price charged.
This allows you to control a load from other locations in addition to the 2 locations that a 3 way circuit provides. If you want to add a fourth fifth sixth or more switches to one of the above circuits all you need to do is add another 4 way switch connected the same way as the four way switch in the diagrams beside another four way switch. All you need to do is find the 4 wire that currently runs from one of your 3 way switches to the other.
Take the freed up 3 way switch to the new location and connect it using the same colors common terminal gets the same color wire as before. I want to add another 4 way. Remove the two travelers from that 3 way switch and connect them to the dark terminals of a new 4 way switch.
